A cut above the usual pumpkins

Tag Halloween decorations candlesTag showed its 2009 Halloween line at the Housewares show last month. The items are a cut above the usual pumpkins, witches, cats and bats (though there are plenty of those, to be sure). I like the 20-inch-long, five-candle tealight holder (above) and the platter and four-plate appetizer set (below).

Placemats in felt

Inspiration is where you find it. When Thea Mehl saw puddles of rain on the street outside her Oslo apartment, she was inspired to design this off-kilter circle grouping of coasters, trivets and placements. The "Tarn" collection from Teroforma is made of 100% Merino wool felt by Aetna Felt in the United States. Diameters are 13 inches, 8 inches and 4 inches (placemats, trivets and coasters), and colors are light gray, dark green and deep blue.
Retailers: See the line at gift shows in Chicago, Dallas, New York and San Francisco.

A tomato-red slicer

Amco Houseworks tomato slicerAmco Houseworks' new tomato slicer, just introduced at the Home and Housewares Show, is the right kitchen gadget for the upcoming tomato season. (I'm dreaming of a Caprese salad.)
Use the red cover to push the tomato through the extra-sharp stainless steel blades. Out come uniform one-quarter-inch slices.
